Višnjan School of Astronomy 2007  Hello everybody! I just got back from VSA. All I can say that it was great and I recommend everyone to go if they can. I was in a NEO group (Near Earth Asteroids). Mentors were Stefan Cikota and Reiner Stoss, german astronomer, working at the Astronomical Institute in Heidelberg. He came to VSA from Germany on his Kawasaki. We used two Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, each 30 cm in diameter and equipped with CCD cameras, they reach magnitude 20!!! Although we had only three clear nights on Mallorca, we confirmed 4 asteroids, one of which was NEO, making us codiscoverers of that object. We also measured coordinates of comet McNaught and sent it to MPC (Minor planet Center) and just for fun photographed M27 (Dumbell).
Two nights before leaving, we finally discovered an asteroid, but we didn't send the results because two observations within 24 hours are needed to make sure that it is not a hot pixel or something like that. We wanted to photograph it the last night but telescopes lost their orientation, and someone was needed to go there and reset them manually. Since there was nobody to do that, and we had to go home, we are still waiting. We worked every night till 7am, every morning we ate donuts, kind of tradition, and then slept till 1pm. Official langugage was english. Meteor group slept on hill Tićan in the observatory underneath the 1meter telescope. Robotic group automated the new dome and wrote programs for meteor gorup. Light pollution group counted lamps in Višnjan and surroundings and made some models of light pollution. There were many lectures, one by Mario Jurić about gallaxy collisions and SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey), one by Cikota brothers about an expedition to La Sagra observatory and one by Koradovo about the outer Solar system. Interesting fact is that if the light pollution continues, they will install a gold-plated mirror on Tićan, because gold filters light pollution wavelengths. But then it will be limited to specific objects in the sky. There was also a lecture by Ivan Đikić about newest results in treatment of cancer, although it was for the participants of the Summer School of Science, we also listened. Finally we processed some pictures from Argentina telecope Cerro Burek in search for Transneptunian objects.
